Cairngorm is of a species called the Gems, and there are a ton of pecularities that come with that. Essentially, they are a humanoid sentient rock - for Cairngorm specifically, they are made of a variation of smoky quartz. But what does that all mean?

Gems are immortal. They do not age, and cannot be killed. They are "born" at full maturity and at full size. Because of this, they lack a true understanding of death and the passage of time.

Gems can be shattered. With enough force, a gem can break or shatter depending on their hardness. While this will not kill them, they are prone to losing memories if they do not collect the pieces that are chipped off of them - but, so long as enough of a broken gem's pieces are collected and put back together, they can continue living. Gems can cut off some of their hair (which is made of crystal too! it's really sparkly) to replace small missing fragments of their body, if they don't have any other suitable material on hand. Another thing is that a gem's "skin" is actually a fine white dust made of plants that gems powder on to both protect their gem body and to resemble each other more closely. Lastly, gems will actually chip each other if they touch, so physical contact between them is rare unless they are wearing gloves.

Gems don't need to eat or breathe. They feed directly off of sunlight, and because they are organ-less, do not require any further sustenance. Gems can also get energy from other forms of luminescence (for example, the glow of jellyfish), but of course, this is much less effective than the sun's rays. They also don't need to breathe, so they can go underwater or into space without any trouble at all. Gems are also incapable of feeling temperature, and are thus able to survive in a variety of climates.

However, gems do need to sleep. Despite lacking many other "human" qualities, they do need to sleep. Most gems also hibernate during the winter time due to the low level of sunlight. Going without hibernation can be exhausting for a gem - this is the explanation for why Cairngorm is so tired and cranky all the time; they were woken up right in the middle of their annual hibernation.

Gems are genderless. They don't have a concept of gender within their civilization.

Those are things that all gems have in common! Cairngorm is a unique gem in that they spent most of their life "underneath" another gem, Ghost Quartz. While they were still sentient, Cairngorm rarely had control over their shared body, as Ghost Quartz basically acted as the "outer shell" of the two of them.
