They probably wouldn't be able to speak at the level we do at all. Sensei teaches us language.

We could communicate non-verbally, I guess, but without Sensei, I doubt they'd be able to see very clearly. We're born naturally without eyes, and need to be given them. Does that make sense?
[ oh. that makes sense, actually. With gems not having parents (presumably), they'd need someone else to teach them anything... although it does make him realize that he knows very little about how gems actually come about.

[ well... Lupin's no biologist or anything, but that sounds like a bizarre way for any animal to live. If gems count as animals. Do they? He supposes Cairngorm is more like a big hivemind of lots of little animals... which is weird to think about, so he doesn't for long. ]
